Hi I am Charlie Thackway!

I am a third year BFA student at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago
with a focus in sculpture and designed objects.

I believe that a more peaceful, equal and sustainable world is possible. This belief is the long term driving force of my practice. The building blocks of my perspective and the groundwork for my commentary.

In a society that constantly pushes progression, we forget the planet and the people that inhabit it. Recklessly moving forward we discard the very things we worked so hard on in the past, leaving them to rot and tarnish the world around us. As a sculptor and designer I am placed in the center of this cycle, as physical objects are my language I have a say in what is put out into the world. Through my practice I want to address these problems that face the world today, namely the threat of climate change and the inequalities that it surrounds.

HOW CAN I?

In this approach I have been deeply inspired by my surroundings in Chicago, a post-industrial city that is shamelessly raw. The history and decay that surrounds us has been an inspiration in seeking to build a future through the remnants of the past.

Physical objects are at the forefront of my practice, but as a multi disciplinary artist, constantly going through growth and change, my work outside of the 3 dimensions informs my work within. I believe the division between the arts are  blured in my work as sound, video, and drawing help me to envision and actualize the ideas I bring to the world.
